4 Responses to Years 1-10

  1. Angus Livingstone says:

    Hi Collin!

So, I’m about to begin my Silver Age read-through. Reading all this was extremely helpful, but I am curious about one such thing listed here in regards to the sliding time scale.

In reference to Green Lantern’s and Martian Manhunter’s debuts, you stated that every date is moved roughly 10 years forward. Would this rule apply the Flash as well (1956 changed to 1966)?

I’m also curious as to where heroes like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Arrow, and Black Canary would fall in terms of their debuts in-universe. Based on my (very!) limited Silver Age experience, it would make sense to me that they would debut all around the same time as Clark and Bruce, since they all had Golden Age counterparts and didn’t have drastic changes to their characters like Barry and Hal did from Jay and Alan, but given that some of the other heroes have specific debut dates, maybe they had specific debut dates as well?

    • Justice League of America #144 is an important story here. It details a lot of the early history that you are addressing, albeit in pretty vague terms. Suffice to say, the sliding-timeline puts the flashback in JLofA #144 in 1969 (Year 3). Virtually all of the heroes debut around 1967-1969. In JLofA #144 we are told that Martian Manhunter has been secretly crime-fighting since before Batman debuted, as early as 1965 (but only in disguised human form). In JLofA #144 we are also told that Green Lantern has only been a member of the Corps for a few weeks, so he definitely debuts in 1969. All the other heroes are rookies, meaning they’ve debuted at some point around 1967 through 1969.

Batman debuts first. (Well, to be precise, Superman has been active since he was a teen—as “Superboy”—and Martian Manhunter has been secretly active in disguised human form for a couple years, as mentioned above). Flash is definitely still pretty green in JLofA #144, but he might have been around for a couple years by 1969. The sliding-timeline works ROUGHLY on a ten-year basis. Key word: ROUGHLY. Flash’s October 1956 debut actually gets slid about 10-and-a-half years to the middle of 1967. Hope that makes sense!

  2. Vince Dominick says:

    Hi Colin,

I was wondering if DC had their own “official” timeline of the Silver Age history, as they do with The Modern Age. And if they do, how many years does it last? Thanks!

    • Hi Vince,

As far as I know DC never published a Silver Age timeline “officially” or “unofficially.” The Silver Age starts off a few years prior to the debut of the Justice League, and DC basically operated in real time—beginning in the early 60s going right up until about 1980. A few undeniable time-sliding shifts in the early 80s (most notably in the Superboy Vol. 2 series) made things more current, altering the timeline significantly. To answer your question more succinctly, basically DC was operating in real time for over 20 years before time-sliding when the 80s came, eventually leading to the actual full-on outright reboot with Crisis in 1986. My timeline takes into account all of the early 80s time-sliding. In any case, if DC were to have an “official” Silver Age/Bronze Age timeline by the time Crisis came along it would have been about 25 years long.

Hope this answers your question a bit! It’s not a simple answer, unfortunately.

      🙂
