20 Responses to Modern Years 11-15

  1. cirsova says:

How did Crisis affect the Batman and the Outsiders continuity and where does that fit into the canon? For the most part, it jibes with the post-crisis Year One continuity, with a few oddball exceptions, such as Robin noting that he’s been Robin for 11 years (he’s 19, leader of the New Teen Titans and not yet Nightwing; a young Jason Todd pops up but is not yet Robin) and a reference to Superman’s strength coming from Earth’s comparatively lower gravity during a fight with Geo-Force. The original run, though, ends around the time Crisis happens; did B&tO get wiped out by Crisis or did it get grandfathered in? Some of the year 10 stuff you mentioned indicated that events such as Batman’s leaving the Justice League and forming the Outsiders is still canon… so I guess my questions are what made it and what got nuked?

    Thanks!

    • Hi. This is from a footnote on the site, but it gives your answer pretty well, I think. In a nutshell, the first 31 issues of the Batman & The Outsiders series take place BEFORE Crisis on Infinite Earths. Therefore, most of these first 31 issues are simply pre-Crisis reference materials (which get added in as skeletal notated versions based upon dialogue references in later definitively post-Crisis Outsiders issues. According to my research, only the issues I’ve listed in Year Ten (as REFERENCE NOTES) are the stories that have been canonically referenced in the Modern Age. This actually makes sense because everything’s been mega-compressed in Year Ten, meaning the Outsiders don’t debut until late November, meaning further that their abridged Modern adventures leading up to the Crisis all happen in quick succession (in the span of a little more than a month).

Batman and the Outsiders Annual #2 and Batman and the Outsiders #28-32 were all written around the time of the original Crisis, making things confusing as to their placement. However, since we know for a fact that Looker doesn’t join the Outsiders until after Batman leaves the team in the Modern Age, logic dictates that anything prior to Batman and the Outsiders #32 (where Batman quits) has to be pre-Crisis. Some sources list Batman and the Outsiders Annual #2 and Batman and the Outsiders #28 (both published in December 1985) as the first post-Crisis Outsiders stories, but this cannot be true.

  2. Stefan Radermacher says:

Unfortunately, the Unauthorized Chronology of the DC Universe by Chris J. Miller seems to be no longer available at the specified link.

  3. Pocok says:

    Hey!

I’m planning to do a custom binding of Batman (Year one until Knightfall) but I’m uncertain whether i should include EVERY appearance, cameo or not.

How can I determine one comics’ “importance”? Normally I would have chosen just the basic, Bat related titles, but seeing this list (and others)… oh well, I’m quite overwhelmed now.

Can you help me out somehow please? (advice, anything)

    • Hi Pocok, whenever I get asked questions about bookbinding, if you are using my site as a reference, I always suggest skipping all the references, notes, and flashbacks. My site is inclusive (to a fault if you are bookbinding with any sense of efficiency and cost in mind). However, a lot of folks I’ve chatted with in the past have done custom bindings of trade paperback (collected) materials only. Not sure if that’s an option you’d entertain, but that’s my two cents. Hope it helps a little!

If you are talking about “pure” importance (and looking solely at the Modern Age), then check out the list I’ve compiled in the footnotes of the Modern Times section of this website.

      • Pocok says:

Damn, sorry for the late reply, somehow I don’t get notifications to my email address. (is it intentional or just my mail program is buggy?)

Again, thank you so much here too for your answer.

I thought about the same (skipping the references, flashbacks), its good you reinforced my idea!

2 more questions, if you don’t mind (and I apologize if I seem like a little pushy about all these questions haha):

        1) I see the last part of Silver Age (prior to CoIE, the Doug Moench era) is not as detailed as stuff before it, are you planning to go back and revisit/continue those readings?

        2) I’m not sure about it, but if 2 stories are contradict to each other (like Nightwing Year One and batman #408-409 or Batman Annual 14 and Long Halloween (about Two Face’s origin)) should I include the most modern interpretation of it or rather stick to the old material that visually are closer to the other content around that time? What do you think? I know chronology-wise its always better to use the newer material in any case (if its a retcon), but I’m still unsure.

        • Not pushy at all, and I’m happy to answer questions.

          1) Which part are you referring to exactly i.e. which year? When I started this project 10 years ago (wow, time flies!), I began with the Modern Age. And when I started, I didn’t realize how damn important it would be to write extremely detailed synopses. So, a lot of the Modern Age section of the site has rather brief summaries in comparison to the other sections. Once I’m done with the Silver Age portion of the website, I do plan on going back and revisiting some things for edit—grammatical corrections, adding missed items, and, yes, fleshing out some of the thinner synopses. However, this is something that might not get done for years TBH.

          2) Comics. They ain’t so easy, are they? One would think that the most recent version of something would trump prior versions, but that’s not necessarily the case. Generally, a newer version will retcon something, but then a later creator can and will go ahead and reference or flash-back-to the older version anyway. This tends to create a hybrid history that merges multiple stories together. This Frankenstein history, when built, is what I’ve tried to show in my chronology. It sometimes requires a lot of caveats, fanwanks, and special architecture, but ultimately you can get the gist of things. This, obviously, doesn’t lend itself well to the art of bookbinding. I’m not sure what I’d recommend. I guess I’d read the footnotes and details of my synopses and go with your gut. In regard to Long Halloween, it definitely gets referenced late into the Modern Age.

          • Pocok says:

            1) Preciously Silver Age Year 18, starting with Batman 372 part 2 (and probably Detective Comics 539) and onward to Batman 400 and Detective Comics 567.

            2) Alright, thank you!

            • My project isn’t finished, Pocok. This is a live project, and it’s been live and ongoing since 2009. I’ve been reading every single Batman comic ever published since 1939. First, I read everything from 1986 to 2020. I’m currently at 1984, working my way up to Crisis. If you view the Silver Age section, you’ll see daily updates as I read through the issues.

              • Pocok says:

Noted, will keep a close look at it!

              • Pocok says:

Oh, one more question (I apologize, really):

Is there a “changelog” or “updates” page somewhere?

I know CURRENTLY (and possible for weeks ahead) you will work on the Silver Age stuff, but after that, how can we, (the visitors) follow your progress later on?

Is there a way (if you modify something for example much much later in the Modern Age section) to see how the order changed?

                • Hey Pocock,

I used to have a change-log, but I was still managing all of the different timelines all at once, so it was too unwieldy and required too much attention to be able to properly manage. However, now that I’m solely focused on just the Silver Age and wrapping up the Rebirth Era, I could conceivably add in a change-log for the entire site. I’ll look into this…

    A couple of quick notes:

JLA Incarnations #6 should be moved up before JLI #15 due to Mister Miracle’s presence in the story. He was kidnapped in JLI #15 so JLI Incarnation #6 needs to be before that and Guy returns to his old self before that storyline is over.

Detective Comics #596 takes place just before the start of Invasion! #3 as the Gene Bomb goes off at the end of the story. #597 continues directly from #596 so it takes place in between pages 2 and page 23 (his next appearance) of Invasion! #3.

Also I question the placement of New Teen Titans #18 after Legends as a comment in issue 22 states that Steve Dayton’s story continues in Swamp Thing #50 which I believe belongs close to Crisis. And several months seem to pass before New Teen Titans #24. Jason Todd’s presence as Robin in the New Teen Titans storyline and his crippling in Legends have led me to believe that maybe all of the Brother Blood storyline up until issue #31 might be before Legends.

Since there are no actual references in either New Teen Titans or Legends to one another, I think this might be the order that makes the most sense. You’d have the end of the Brother Blood cult and people being disillusioned and feeling taken advantage of and this could very well lead them to blame superheroes, so when G. Gordon Godfrey came along people were easy to convince.

Finally, you’ve placed Captain Atom between Legends #5 and #6. Considering the ban on superheroes did not end until the end of Legends I’d say that Captain Atom #2 needs to take place after Legends. In issue 2 it has been 12 days since first sighting. Personally I have it after Detective Comics #571-572 (the latter you’ve moved almost a year though, which I’m not sure I understand why)

    • Thanks for all the notes, I’ll take a look and make changes where appropriate! (I have ‘tec #572 pushed to late in the year simply because it’s a one-shot Xmas story.)

    • Tenzel Kim says:

Also Action Comics #670 is listed before Armageddon 2001 #2. Armageddon 2001 #2 takes place in between pages of Action Comics #670 and the pages that feature Batman take place after Armageddon 2001.

      Questions:

Is there a reason you’ve moved Dark Knight over Metropolis before A Lonely Place of Dying. Dark Knight started in June 1990 whereas A Lonely Place began in October 1989

You have placed Batman: Gordon’s Law not long after Sword of Azrael in early 1993, but the book came out in 1996. I don’t see any indication that it is supposed to be a “flashback” story, so wondering why it has been moved.

      • Thanks, again! And I don’t think there’s any discernible reasoning behind either of my early placements of Dark Knight Over Metropolis or Gordon’s Law. (I know that I spent some time years ago, shifting them around, which may have led to anachronistic placement.) In any case, these all seem like things worth fixing. Glad to have your guidance and expertise on this.

Hi again! I’m not sure of the exact placement, but Batman appears (not physically, but talking with Tim trough comms) in Robin plus Impluse. And also, the other Robin Plus one shot (with Fang), doesn’t include Batman but has a small reference about him training Robin on throwing handguns at people.
