Are Batman: Year One and Batman: Zero Year considered canon in this timeline?
Hi Alessio. Certain elements of both stories have been made canon in the Rebirth/Infinite Frontier era.
Thank you
I really think Robin and Batman could be canon, and I think it’s worth the effort. It’s unique and sets this era as distinct from the others, as well as creating a nice reading point for the past instead of relying on single-panel flashbacks or cryptic references.
I’ve gone over with a fine-tooth comb over your problems (the Teen Titans forming and Firestorm and Elongated Man’s presence, which really means “the satellite’s presence”)
-You placed the debut of the satellite in Year Six. Robin obviously couldn’t have debuted in Year 6, but what about squeezing those early JLA adventures into year 1? You could move Robin’s debut a few years later, perhaps, since I honestly feel The Long Halloween and Jokes of Laughs and Riddles work better before there’s a Robin.
-The first reference to Elongated Man on the Rebirth era is on Year 7 with Justice League Detroit, but this doesn’t mean he couldn’t have previously joined during the satellite era as it originally happened.
Now, Doomsday Clock established Firestorm debuted seven years before Year 18, but have you not fudged with named dates before?
-Now let’s talk about the Teen Titans. Green Arrow 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1 shows Green Arrow introducing Speedy to Robin, but the next reference is Hard Travellin’ Heroes, which happened during the satellite era. So who’s to say the 80th Anniversary issue flashback doesn’t take place at the same time as Robin and Batman #2? The only inconsistency would be Green Arrow’s costume.
As for the Titans debuting fighting Mr. Twister, who’s to say that wasn’t one of the missions the kids sneak off to during R&B #2? We are shown three of them, but it doesn’t say they only attended three.
-Another problem could be Justice League Vol. 4 #53 and #57, where Robin recalls seeing the JLA for the first time during his second year and while their headquarters were still on Earth. Still, he does mention Batman would introduce him properly later as he does in R&B, so the only problem is the date, but you often ignore named dates and this is Dick remembering things in a fairly traumatised state during Death Metal.
-There’s a flashback in Titans Vol. 3 #19 where Robin is introduced to the JLA, but ah! The flashback doesn’t actually show this event, so there’s no contradiction with R&B. The flashback shows the aftermath, with Batman and Robin talking alone and Batman telling Dick he’ll lead the JLA.
So the biggest hurdle is squeezing 5 years of JLA Adventures into Year 1. Let’s look at what that would entail:
-The JLA must defeat Darkseid, Starro, Xotar, Despero, Cheetah, Kanjar Ro (twice), The Getaway Master’s gang, Amazo, Dr. Light, Epoch, Eclipso, The Crime Champion, Matter Master, The Anti-Matter Man, The Key, The Royal Flush Gang, Toyman, Dr. Destiny, Queen Bee, Mongul, the Ultra-Humanite, Vandal Savage, Gorilla Grodd, Goldface, and a final unspecfied mission.
That’s 25 cases. Even at a rate of one per week, I think it’s doable.
What do you think? It think at least it was worth trying.
Hey Martin, Your track record for suggestions speaks for itself, so I’ll def take a look! And you certainly aren’t the first person hoping to move Robin’s debut later.
My initial reservations pertain to the fact that multiple writers have placed Robin’s debut in Year One, including Tom King and Tom Taylor, just to name two recent ones. Taylor’s Nightwing #78 tells us that Dick is already living at Wayne Manor while Jim Gordon is a Lieutenant, which puts the Death of the Flying Graysons in Year One. King’s Batman run consistently put Robin’s debut prior to Catwoman’s, which also places him in Year One. (Although, King might be about to upend his own timeline with The Killing. We’ll keep an eye on that one.)
Generally speaking, Infinite Frontier has given creators carte blanche to reference and canonize prior continuity, but a problem comes up when a writer decides not to do that, instead seemingly writing his own fresh version of continuity (as we see here with Jeff Lemire’s Robin and Batman). To me, Robin and Batman, at first glance, screams out-of-continuity, reading as Robin debuting during the Satellite-era JLA. Zatanna, Elongated Man, Firestorm, Red Tornado, et all appear to be in the JLA, not just hanging out or whatever, which means that all their introductory arcs would need to occur earlier as well if this were canon. It seems to me that most authors and editors are currently viewing the past more closely aligned to what things were originally like chronologically—a Silver, Bronze, and Modern Age with a post-Flashpoint time period existing as a memoryless thanks to Dr. Manhattan era, followed by a Rebirth/Infinite Frontier present day. Robin and Batman would be an rather extremely radical departure from that. But again, I’ll certainly take a look and get back to you!
Something worth considering is Batman/Catwoman Special #1 shows a flashback of Catwoman learning about the existence of Robin with her Catwoman costume, so after the boat. My takeaway from this is the Rebirth era might have had a boat without Robin.
As for Dick living in the Manor while Gordon is a lieutenant, well, maybe there was a transitional period between moving in and starting training. But I do think it’s easier to move the satellite earlier than Robin later.
I’ll definitely consider that (and everything you’ve suggested). Going to wait until King’s Killing Time wraps in a few months before I address anything Robin-related though. Thanks, Martin!
I decided to ask King directly.
“Since Batman/Catwoman Special shows Selina finding out about Robin from Joker in her costume, and that would have to go after The Boat, are we to understand the rebirth version of the boat happened without Robin?”
His response: “Not a weird question. Yeah I struggle with this too. In my mind, Batman spent years fighting all the rogues before he met Robin, but I know in that first Catwoman boat appearance in 1941 Robin is there…blame it on Superboy Prime banging on the wall.”
So, he’s got no idea.
OOOH DAMN, I can’t believe he hit you with a “Superboy Prime punch”! lol thanks for going straight to the source. I think that we can likely ignore Robin’s appearance, especially in light of this response. I’m probably going to move Robin’s debut a bit later. But I’m still going to wait until The Killing ends before I do anything.
King is fascinating though, isn’t he? Like, YOU are the writer. YOU can determine when Robin debuts. YOU are the one that decided to include Robin in that flashback scene. If King truly feels “in his mind” that “Batman spent years fighting all the rogues before he met Robin” then why not simply WRITE THAT? Wild stuff.
Well, today’s issue of Batman/Catwoman confirmed Robin was in the boat.
Wait, so in Bat/Cat Special #1 Catwoman learns about Robin from Joker for the first time? But in Bat/Cat #11 Robin is said to have been on the boat? Tom King is doing this contradiction within his very own title?
TK doesn’t make it easy, does he? I’m going to see what curve ball he throws us with Killing Time. If there’s good reason to move Robin’s debut later, then I will do so. Let’s not forget that Bat/Cat technically is non-canon, so take it with a grain of salt. Plus, in your own interactions with TK online (and his many interviews and blog posts), he seems to constantly (and frustratingly) operate in this bizarre in-and-out-of continuity world.
I realize this isn’t strictly Batman related, but did the Barry Allen Flash and Hal Jordan Green Lantern debut around Year One as well?
Hi Dilsher, Batman and Superman debut prior to Flash, Green Lantern, and the others (aside from Wonder Woman, who goes way way back). Flash and Green Lantern likely debut within a few months to a year after Batman and Superman. It’s likely that they both debut at some point toward the tail end of this Year One.
